If you use Claude regularly, you have probably typed a detailed prompt to get a decent result. Maybe you saved it somewhere to reuse it. That is a prompt. What is a Claude prompt?
A prompt is a one-off instruction you type or paste into a Claude conversation. It can be short ("write a LinkedIn post about our product launch") or long and detailed. Either way, it has three limitations that never go away:
- Static knowledge. Claude answers from its training data. If you ask for a LinkedIn post, Claude does not check what is trending on LinkedIn this week. It uses what it learned during training, which may be months or years old.

What is a Claude skill file?

- Interview step. The skill asks 3 narrowing questions calibrated to the specific use case. This replaces the guesswork and produces output that is specific to you, not a generic facsimile.
- Quality gate. Before delivering the output, the skill runs an internal self-check — comparing the draft against criteria for that use case (hook strength, specificity, slop patterns, length). Weak drafts are rewritten before you ever see them.
