What Is a Claude AI Skill?

Definition: A Claude AI skill is a structured prompt file that runs inside Claude to produce a specific professional output — such as a pitch deck, cold email, PRD, or LinkedIn post. You paste the skill into claude.ai, answer 2–3 clarifying questions, and receive a ready-to-use result. No coding, no API key, and no paid Claude subscription required.

How a Claude Skill Works

When you open a Claude conversation and paste a skill file, Claude reads the embedded instructions and begins a structured intake — asking questions specific to your task rather than producing a generic output from the first sentence.

For example, a cold email skill asks about the prospect's role, what pain you're targeting, and what outcome you want from the conversation. A PRD skill asks about current system architecture, team ownership, and which decisions are already locked. This constraint intake is what separates a Claude skill from a standard prompt.

After intake, the skill runs live research (where relevant), applies a quality gate that checks the draft against the task's success criteria, and delivers a final output formatted for immediate use.

Claude Skills vs. Regular AI Prompts

A regular prompt tells the AI what to write. A Claude skill tells the AI how to think before it writes — which intake questions to ask, what research to run, what quality criteria the output must meet, and how the final document should be structured.

The difference in output quality is significant: a raw "write me a pitch deck" prompt produces a generic 10-slide structure. A pitch deck skill asks about your investor stage, the problem you're solving, current traction, and the round size — then writes a narrative calibrated to those specifics.

Common Questions
Is a Claude skill the same as a custom GPT?
No. A custom GPT is a configured ChatGPT instance that requires a ChatGPT account. A Claude skill is a prompt file that works in any Claude conversation — including the free claude.ai plan — without creating a separate app or integration. Claude skills also run live research before writing, which custom GPTs don't do by default.
How is a Claude skill different from Claude Projects?
Claude Projects (a Claude Pro feature) stores persistent instructions and files across conversations. A Claude skill is a self-contained prompt file you paste into any conversation — it doesn't require Projects or a Pro subscription. Skills are also more structured: they include defined intake questions, research steps, and quality gates that aren't present in typical Project instructions.
What kinds of tasks do Claude skills cover?
